Emoticonnections: Gone
October 29, 2007

As quickly as they came, they're gone. I got a nice bunch of feedback and most was pretty bad. Not mean, of course, just honest and valued. I think there was something interesting in the concept that I wanted to try, but I'm not sure this was the space to do it in. It's one of those things that seemed like a good idea at the time, but in theory, eh, not so much. So, never let it be said that I don't listen to my readers. I really do want people to enjoy the strip and not have to have them sit through (or worse, go somewhere else) during the time it would take for me to do the things with this concept that I wanted to. So, yeah...Thanks to everyone who wrote in to give me their opinions.

Anyway, I pulled those comics from the site so there's no confusion about having a barely-started story that goes nowhere. New Wiggles will return next week as usual in the same format with the same loveably deviant characters.

Emoticonnections
October 28, 2007

So, as I'm sure you can see, I'm doing this "Emoticonnection" story—a narrative using just emoticons to show the evolution of a relationship. It was an idea I had that I thought would be kind of interesting to try out. I liked how the characters were distilled to really just plain emotion and thought the arc of a relationship would work well with that concept. This week's strip is a little sappy, but necessary to build the story up, I think because, as those of you familiar with my work might guess, things might not possibly end well with our happy couple. I'm not sure how many strips it will end up being just yet. Probably between seven and twelve. Let me know how you like it as it proceeds. If you like it, it will err towards the longer spectrum. If you hate it, I'll end it early. :)

Children's Books at The Society of Illustrators
October 16, 2007

3 books I art directed got accepted into the Society of Illustrators original art show for the best in children's book illustration: Fiona Loves the Night illustrated by Amanda Shepherd, Hansel and Diesel, illustrated by David Gordon, and Phooey!, illustrated by Marc Rosenthal. Very cool!

Awesome Signing
October 8, 2007

I've got some comics in Awesome: The Indie Spinner Rack Anthology which is debuting next week at SPX. Nothing new from me unfortunately, but some things of mine that haven't been published widely that you might not have seen. The anthology looks pretty kick-ass. Other contributors include Al Columbia, Renee French, Nick Bertozzi, Bernie Mireault, Raina Telgemeier, Steve Hamaker, Dave Roman, Josh Cotter, Kazimir Strzepek, Liz Prince, Robert Goodin, Matt Kindt, Roger Langridge, Sam Hiti, GB Tran, Jamie Tanner, Alec Longstreth and many, many more. If you're in NYC, there's going to be a book signing/release party at Rocketship in Brooklyn at 8pm which I'll be attending. Drop on by, check out the anthology, and say, "hi."

[Update: I'm retarded and forgot to mention the date. It's on the 19th. Please note that this has changed from the original date mentioned in the flyer. I took the link down so no one would get confused.]

Superjail
October 1, 2007

As a freelance illustrator/cartoonist/designer type person, I get to work on some really cool projects. Right now I'm doing some non Mr. Wiggles comic strips for a government agency (can't really talk about that project in detail right now though 'cuz it's hush hush) and art directing/designing a few high profile children's books. These are great, but what I'm really excited about at the moment is that I just signed on to be a character artist for the first few episodes of the upcoming animated show, Superjail on Adult Swim. This show is pretty fucked up in all the right ways. You can see clips of the pilot on Youtube here and here. I've never really done animation work before so I'm totally psyched to learn all about it and to work with Aaron Augenblick and the gang over at Augenblick Studios. And, like I said, the show is pretty awesome. I'll be starting at the end of the month. I can't wait! If things work out and my schedule allows, I may even stay on for a few more episodes.
