MoCCA Wrap-Up
June 14, 2009

MoCCA was awesome! Thanks to everyone who came down, to all of the people who bought my books and stopped by my table, and to all the new (and old) friends I met. I can't add much that hasn't already been hit over the head by the blogosphere, so I'll just sum up some random comments, impressions, and experiences from MoCCA.

  1. MoCCA was hot. Again. I LOVE MoCCA, but I have yet to experience one without sweating like a pig. They simply must find a way to get this thing appropriately air-conditioned. Comic folk are naturally sweaty awkward folk already so this doesn't help any.
  2. Other than the heat, I really liked the new space. It wasn't as fancy as The Puck Building, but much better suited to the convention and to the throngs of people who came.
  3. Frank Reyonoso and his girlfriend Irena Ivanova are super nice (but I already knew that)! You should buy his comic Saucy to help support him!
  4. GB Tran knows how to bring it. As always. Look for his graphic novel Vietnamerica to come out in 2010. It will be awesome.
  5. Ben Marra is either a genius or a madman. In either case, his comic Gangsta Rap Posse is incredible, horrific, entirely wrong, offensive, and also amazing.
  6. The rest of the Mammal Magazine guys are geniuses as well. If you don't know their work, check out Devin Clark's, Dan Meth's, Tom Forget's, Matt Dorfman's and Jim Cooke's sites. (Sidenote: I did character art for the pilot of Devin's show, Ugly Americans, which was just picked up by Comedy Central)
  7. I love the bathrooms at comic conventions. Typical men's bathroom at a comic-con: eight empty urinals, stalls completely full. This is my crowd. Pee-shy brothers unite!
  8. Found out John Dilworth was a fan of mine! He's the creator of the show, Courage the Cowardly Dog. He seems like a really great guy and is a burst of energy.
  9. Found out Garth Ennis was a fan of mine! If you don't know Garth Ennis's work, you must get started NOW.
  10. Excited about Emily Flake's next book? Well, you should be!
  11. The annual Indie Spinner Rack MoCCA dinner is always fun. This year was Thai. So yummy...
  12. Neil Kleid's and Nicolas Cinquegrani's The Big Kahn looks like a great read.
  13. Pat Aulisio gave me a copy of his zine Bootlegs. Really really funny!
  14. Met tons of other awesome people and got some other really cool books.
  15. Came back wiped out and barely able to function. Got up at 5am the next day to get my comic done. Yep, that's right! Gotta make those deadlines!

Anyway, that's my half-assed MoCCA wrap-up. MoCCA is always great and always exhausting. But I will definitely be there next year and will hopefully have some new non-Mr. Wiggles-related comic stuffs to share then. Hope to see you there in 2010!
