FHM Russia Good news for all my Russian fans (and for me too as well)! Original Mr. Wiggles comics will be published monthly in FHM Russia starting in the September issue. I'm working on my first comic for them now. MoCCA Report
As always, the MoCCA Art Fest rocked! I look forward to it every year and it never disappoints. I woke up early Saturday morning and hauled my ass down to the Puck Building with a box of comics, some original art, and a stack of promo cards. I was supposed to sit next to pal GB Tran but, because of some mix-up on MoCCA's part, gave up my table to pals Royal Flush so they could be by a wall and instead sat next to my other pals Ryan Dunlavey and Fred Van Lente of Action Philosophers fame. The day started off slow, but by noon the table was hopping. I saw all the usual group of friends and met lots of awesome people and by lunchtime had sold enough books and art to cover my all-important table costs. Since I was working my table alone, I wasn't able to wander the convention, but from where I was standing it seemed like there was good traffic all the way through it. Syracuse grads were in high attendance really representin'. There was me, Ryan Dunlavey, Fred Van Lente, the Mammal Magazine guys (Devin Clark, Jim Cooke, Matt Dorfman, Tom Forget, and Ben Marra), Robin Enrico, and MK Reed to name a few, all exhibiting there. It's nice to know there's artistic life after SU. Of course, we're no SVA, which always dominates these comic things, but we've got a nice cluster of graduates working in the industry. The day drew on and wound down as I met with lots of people who were interested (and, of course, lots who weren't interested) in my work. Afterwards, GB, Fred, Ryan, and I headed out for a bite and a drink. There was an Indie Spinner Rack party in the area but I was too exhausted to attend so I went home, popped in an episode of The Wire, and passed out. Sunday was less packed as expected. The insane heat wasn't helping of course so I took a little time to check out the convention before it got busy. Luckily, pal Molly Crabapple, offered to watch my table for half an hour so I could at least see a little of it. I didn't get too far as I ran into a few other friends and before I knew it I was rushing back to my table to relieve Molly. The rest of Sunday went by really quickly. Right when traffic was at its best, however, the fire alarm went off and we were all forced to evacuate the building. GB and I decided it would take a while to let us back in so we went out for some dosas to quench our growing appetites. By the time we got back, they had just finished letting people back in the doors. I finished off the rest of the afternoon by selling most of the stock that I brought to the convention. I even sold one of my Italian editions to someone, which was quite unexpected. At 6:30pm, I packed up and headed home, where I knew this week's comic was waiting to be written and completed in a few hours. I finished that around 1am and passed out cold. So, all in all MoCCA was awesome. I learned a couple of things this year. First, this is the first time I had a full table to myself. Usually I have half a table, but because of a mistake I got a full one. I will never go back. Full tables are the shit. Secondly, I've got to have a helper sit at my booth next time so I can wander around more and see more of the convention. I was supposed to have a student of mine do it this time, but ended up letting her go when she found out she could have a table all to herself at the last minute. So, that's about it, really. I'd like to thank everyone who stopped by my booth! Hopefully I turned some new people on to my work and I definitely enjoyed meeting all the usual faces as well as all the new ones. Let me know how you enjoyed the convention and, if you're a new reader who's coming to my site from seeing me at the convention, please let me know what you think of my work! Hope to see you at next year's MoCCA! I've already booked my (full) table! *Photo stolen from Chad Beckerman's blog. |
